Grief and Hope During the Holidays

Long Island group assists those dealing with suicide, overdose, and other tragic loss of loved ones.

Now taking new participants for winter 2017 sessions.

From the moment the Thanksgiving table is cleared, the pursuit of holiday cheer is everywhere you look. But what most of us never see is the solitary sadness of grief that grips so many during the holiday season.

It’s a common situation happening in every place people live and love – which is pretty much everywhere – but here on Long Island, amidst it’s 7.5 Million souls, the effects of loss can be more acute than almost everywhere in the state. Suffolk County has the highest number of drug-overdose deaths of all New York counties. Suffolk also sees more suicides than any other county.

It is through this under-served health issue that gave rise to The Neighborhood House of Sayville, helping those with grief and loss since 2013.  The Neighborhood House was created by people concerned about the absence of support in our communities.

Some of the services provided by The Neighborhood House:

  • Support groups for children and adults grieving the loss of a family member or loved one with special groups designated for those grieving death by suicide or overdose, loss of a partner, and parental loss of a child.
  • Community Awareness workshops on suicide prevention and response, drug and alcohol awareness, social media issues and guidelines for parents, as well as general information about normal grieving.

Neighborhood House is now conducting intake sessions for the Winter 2017 program. Services are completely free and run by licensed mental health professionals trained in grief and traumatic loss.

The biggest barrier between grieving people and recovery is often as simple as knowing where to go. For those seeking help for friends and loved ones stricken by sadness, one lead to a possible solution can be the very first step for someone getting their life back.
