SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Legislation to improve the lives of people living with autism in New York State is now law.
It’s something many families have been waiting for especially the assemblyman who sponsored the measure.
For New York State Assemblymen Angelo Santabarbara, this day was a personal victory not just for him, but also for his family and his son.
The Democratic assemblymen hailed the governor’s signing of the autism action plan bill Monday night.
The law includes many pieces including the creation of an Autism Spectrum Disorders Advisory Board, which would create an autism action plan.
It will also clear the way for a central location for autism services in New York State.
It’s a cause that hits close to home for the assemblyman because his son was diagnosed with autism at 3 years old.
“1 in 68 children diagnosed. That’s one adult in 68. There’s a crisis for support services and it needs immediate attention and I think the community had identified that. That’s why we have seen this bill get to the point where it is now signed into law,” Santabarbara said.
Santabarbara held a press conference at Puzzles Bakery in Schenectady. The perfect backdrop, because they provide employment opportunities for adults with special needs.
The law takes effect immediately.
Sanatabarbara says the board will be created soon, focus on children to adults including job and housing opportunities.
