NYC DOB Names Acting Commissioner, Department of Buildings
Updated: March 22, 2022
The New York City Department of Buildings has announced that First Deputy Commissioner Gus Sirakis has been named Acting Commissioner of the Department of Buildings.
From NYC DOB:
First Deputy Commissioner Constadino “Gus” Sirakis, P.E., has been named Acting Commissioner of the Department of Buildings, steering efforts to promote the safe and lawful use of nearly 1.1 million buildings and over 40,000 active work sites.
A member of the Department of Buildings since 2006, Acting Commissioner Sirakis has decades of experience in improving Construction Code standards and enforcing compliance with city regulations. Prior to joining the Department, he worked as a structural engineer and project manager at several architectural and engineering consultation firms.
Former Commissioner Melanie E. La Rocca was recently appointed Chief Efficiency Officer for the City for New York by Mayor Eric Adams after three years leading the Department. Under Commissioner La Rocca’s leadership, the Department redoubled its modernization efforts and brought consistency to agency operations. Her tenure also coincided with the first decline in construction-related injuries in over a decade.
A big thank you and fond farewell to Commissioner La Rocca for her dedicated service, and a warm welcome to Acting Commissioner Sirakis!
Mr. Sirakis Bio from NYC DOB:
Appointed First Deputy Commissioner in 2019, Constadino (Gus) Sirakis is a licensed Professional Engineer with several decades of experience in improving construction standards and ensuring compliance with the Building Code.
Gus joined the Department of Buildings (DOB) in 2006. In recent years he served as Deputy Commissioner of Development and Technical Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Technical Affairs and Executive Director of Technical Affairs where his projects included the revision of the structural provisions of the 2008 and the 2014 Construction Codes, the establishment of DOB’s Concrete Enforcement Unit, and the development of DOB’s Special Inspection Requirements for new technology, materials, and national standards. Today, FDC Sirakis is leading another revision of the Construction Codes, including an effort to incorporate all DOB requirements into one single set of rules for existing buildings – an unprecedented effort that will help building owners more readily comply with our regulations.
Since beginning his professional career, Gus has worked as a structural engineer and project manager at several architectural and engineering consultation firms, designing, inspecting and overseeing various projects, including sports stadiums and high-rise buildings, both here and abroad.
FDC Sirakis is respected by colleagues and stakeholders alike. He is the recipient of multiple awards and has served with distinction on the International Code Council since 2007. Gus is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of New York and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY.
