UPDATE – October 6, 2023:
DOB has extended the deadline for design professionals to submit ideas for new pedestrian protection designs in our City.
Published in the City Record last month, our official Request for Proposal (RFP) is seeking ideas from the industry on new designs for sidewalk sheds and alternative pedestrian protection measures. Part of the City’s “Get Sheds Down” plan, the new designs that arise from this RFP will help improve New York City’s pedestrian experience in the public realm.
We are looking for up to six new designs that are less intrusive and nicer to look at, while still providing adequate overhead protection for New Yorkers. The new deadline to submit a proposal is now Thursday, October 19th, 2023.
Those interested in participating should sign-up via the PASSPort Public Portal.

From NYC DOB:
Earlier this Summer, Mayor Eric Adams and the Department of Buildings Commissioner Jimmy Oddo announced the launch of the City’s comprehensive “Get Sheds Down” plan to reduce the number of construction sidewalk sheds in the City, while also improving the physical designs for pedestrian protection equipment when it is necessary to secure public safety.
Critical to the “Get Sheds Down” plan is the replacement of the existing hunter green plywood and pipe design familiar across over 370 miles of sidewalks in our City, with new equipment designs that are more aesthetically appealing, less intrusive on the sidewalks, and that still provide adequate protection from hazardous conditions above. To execute this reimagining of pedestrian protection equipment in our City, DOB is putting out an open call to design, architecture, and engineering firms to submit their ideas for what pedestrian protection will look like in our City.
Published in the City Record, our official Request for Proposal (RFP) is soliciting ideas from the industry on novel designs for sidewalk sheds and alternative pedestrian protection measures. We are looking for up to six new standardized designs that can be incorporated directly into our Codes and will be available to use by any contractor and property owner in the City. Two of these designs will be for heavy-duty sidewalk sheds common at new tower construction sites that can carry a live load of 300psf, two of the designs will be for light-duty sidewalk sheds common at low rise buildings that can carry a live load of 150psf, and the final two designs we are looking for will be non-sidewalk level alternatives such as netting systems or cantilevered roofs.
The Department will review every proposal we receive and will be specifically looking for designs that are a departure from the aesthetics of the current standardized sidewalk sheds and designs that improve the pedestrian experience on our City’s sidewalks.
The deadline to submit a proposal to the Department is Thursday, October 5th, 2023.
A pre-proposal conference hosted by DOB has been scheduled on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at 10:30 am, on the 4th floor of DOB headquarters building at 280 Broadway, New York, NY. Those interested in submitting a proposal for this FRP are encouraged to attend the pre-proposal conference.
Those interested in participating should sign-up via the PASSPort Public Portal.
