As a construction solutions firm, we see innovative acts of engineering heroism every day. On job sites across the city, the impossible is often made possible through the brilliance of imagination, seasoned know-how, and the sheer will to succeed.

Nothing we’ve seen has quite matched the complexity and demonstrated jobsite elegance of building New York City’s tallest modular structure. And after two years of careful planning and coordination, we couldn’t be more proud to see our client, general contractor The Rinaldi Group and their partner DeSimone Consulting Engineers awarded ENR’s 2019 Global Best Project Award for Residential / Hospitality.

Our firm worked from excavation to temporary certificate of occupancy, coordinating some of the most complicated modular pod lifts that often involved multiple city agencies and coordination with the public – all during a season of continuous bad weather and high winds. While modular building is certainly intended to streamline timelines, there are many obstacles that need to be addressed and coordinated efficiently. We certainly have the experience, having worked for more than 18 months on the citizenM New York Bowery Hotel until it’s opening, to assist the next innovative builder of modular hotel construction.

Aerial Citizen M Bowery Hotel

citizenM Bowery drew inspiration from the local community for the hotel’s interior, which is filled with an eclectic mix of contemporary art, photography, and objects by local artists.  With an entrance through a public plaza engulfed in greenery, benches and picnic tables, there is a street-level cafe open to guests and the public. To add to the spectacular vibe of the hotel, the Museum of Street Art (MoSA) created an artist collective, spanning the entire 20-foot high floor staircase in the hotel bar area. If that isn’t enough, there is a rooftop bar/lounge with spectacular 360-degree views of New York.

The citizenM project has so far ignited the imagination of New York City’s real estate industry and the press, garnering coverage in The Commercial Observer with two stories, The Wall Street Journal, The Real Deal, CurbedNY, 6SqFt, WPIX News, Commercial Property Executive, For Construction Pros.com, Hotel Business Magazine, and Treehugger. The project also won an Award for Excellence in Hotel Development by Urban Land Institute.
