Updated: July 31, 2025
The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) has issued an update for all construction professionals managing electrical jobs in the Buildings Information System (BIS). Starting August 23, 2025, any electrical job filed in BIS that has not been signed off by the DOB will be marked as “Abandoned” within the system. This change is part of the city’s ongoing transition to the DOB NOW: Build platform and the implementation of the 2025 NYC Electrical Code.
What Does This Mean for Your Projects?
- Automatic Abandonment: All open BIS electrical jobs not signed off by the DOB by August 23, 2025, will be marked as Abandoned.
- Reinstatement Required: To move forward, these jobs must be reinstated in DOB NOW: Build. The reinstatement process includes:
- Logging into DOB NOW: Build at nyc.gov/dobnow.
- Selecting the “+Job Filing” and “Alteration” options.
- Indicating that you are reinstating a BIS electrical permit and entering the original job number.
- Selecting the applicable edition of the reference standard (NFPA 70):
- Prior to 2008 NEC/2011 NYC Electrical Code
- 2008 NEC/2011 NYC Electrical Code
- 2020 NEC/2025 NYC Electrical Code
- Paying the full filing fee for the reinstated job.
Reference Standards:
You’ll be required to select the correct edition of the reference standard (NFPA 70) when reinstating your job. For more detail, refer to Buildings Bulletin 2024-008, which clarifies when to apply the 2025 NYC Electrical Code versus the 2011 NYC Electrical Code.

Cahill Strategies Construction Solutions Guide to NYC Building Code Chapter 33 Revisions
Cahill Strategies has developed a detailed and documented guide to the most important revisions that New York construction professionals are likely to encounter every day. We were able to do this because Cahill Strategies has been involved instrumentally in the development of these codes.
The 100-page book is meticulously organized and can be used as a handy reference when many common issues arise. In each section, the specific revisions are highlighted, and the new information is presented in a clear and practical manner with further explanation on why the change is so important. All of this, reviewed and vetted by one of New York’s longest serving, former DOB professionals – Cahill Strategies’ Director of Construction Code & Safety, Bobby D’Alessio.
