Updated: June 24, 2026
The NYC Department of Buildings issued a Service Notice on June 24, 2026 covering two changes in DOB NOW that affect licensed applicants and contractors.
Immediate deadline: Electrical inspections (June 25). The deadline to submit Electrical Development Inspection requests and certifiable objections in DOB NOW: Inspections is 5:00 pm on Thursday, June 25, 2026. For electrical permits issued before June 29, 2026 that have not received a Pass-Final inspection result, the applicant is responsible for submitting a re-inspection request. Stakeholders listed on the job filing, or Inspection Delegates authorized under the permit, may file re-inspection requests through DOB NOW: Inspections Plus.
New capability: Business name changes on permit renewals (June 29). Beginning June 29, 2026, applicants can change the business listed on a permit by submitting a Permit Renewal with Changes in DOB NOW: Build. The business selected must be one already associated with the applicant’s license.
When to submit a Renewal with Changes:
- If the Business Name field in the Applicant Information section is blank on the Permit Renewal without Changes, a notification will appear on submission. Select OK, go to the Reason for Filing section, and choose Renew Permit with Changes. The businesses associated with the license will then appear in a dropdown for selection.
- If the Business Name shown is no longer associated with the applicant’s license, do not submit a Renewal without Changes. Submit a Renewal with Changes instead and update the business name.
- A Renewal with Changes can also be used simply to switch the permit to another business associated with the license.
How to submit a Permit Renewal with Changes:
- Log in to DOB NOW and select the DOB NOW: Build module.
- Search for the job filing and select View Work Permit from the Filing Action column.
- From the Work Permits displayed, go to Filing Actions and click Renew Work Permit.
- Check the Contractor/Permit Applicant as the stakeholder and select a new business name from the dropdown in the Applicant Information section.
- Complete all required fields, then save and submit.
Associating a business with a license varies by license type. General Contractors follow the instructions on DOB’s website. Master Plumbers and Master Fire Suppression Piping Contractors submit a Change/Update Business Information request in DOB NOW: Licensing. Professional Engineers and Registered Architects use Manage/Associate Licenses under the person icon in DOB NOW to add a business.
You can also view the businesses currently tied to a license through the Licensee search at nyc.gov/dobnow (select License Number Only and enter the License Number and License Type). For additional help, submit an inquiry at nyc.gov/dobhelp.

Cahill Strategies Construction Solutions Guide to NYC Building Code Chapter 33 Revisions
Cahill Strategies has developed a detailed and documented guide to the most important revisions that New York construction professionals are likely to encounter every day. We were able to do this because Cahill Strategies has been involved instrumentally in the development of these codes.
The 100-page book is meticulously organized and can be used as a handy reference when many common issues arise. In each section, the specific revisions are highlighted, and the new information is presented in a clear and practical manner with further explanation on why the change is so important. All of this, reviewed and vetted by one of New York’s longest serving, former DOB professionals – Cahill Strategies’ Director of Construction Code & Safety, Bobby D’Alessio.
